Islanders are invited to volunteer and be a part of the excitement when the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games are held in Vancouver and Whistler.
The Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) estimates they will need more than 25,000 volunteers. The call for volunteers, issued recently by VANOC, was echoed in Prince Edward Island by Hon. Carolyn Bertram, minister responsible for sport and for culture. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Islanders to make a meaningful contribution to Canada’s Games,” she said. “Having Islanders participate in Vancouver and Whistler will also demonstrate that we are proud to be part of this great national event.”
The opportunity for volunteer involvement at the Olympics was one of the areas outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding signed late last summer by Premier Ghiz and VANOC representatives. Both parties are continuing to explore ways to best apply opportunities in sport, culture, tourism and economic development, which will be presented through the upcoming Olympics.
Vancouver and Whistler will host the Winter Olympics from February 12 to 28, 2010 and the Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010. Volunteers wishing to learn more about this opportunity to share their skills, languages and background can go to the VANOC website at www.VANCOUVER2010.com
