Islanders invited to participate in high blood pressure study

The Heart and Stroke Foundation and Health PEI invite Islanders diagnosed with high blood pressure to participate in a research study examining the impact of internet-supported heart healthy changes on lowering blood pressure.

Led by Dr. Robert Nolan, director of Cardiac eHealth and Behavioural Cardiology Research Unit with the University of Toronto, the twelve-month-long R.E.A.C.H. study (Reduced risk with E-based support for Adherence to lifestyle Change in Hypertension) will:

• assess the use of heart healthy changes through internet support on participating individuals;

• check participants’ blood pressure and cholesterol levels and send results to their doctors; and,

• provide participants with information about their respective heart health risk factors.

Islanders may be eligible to participate if they:

• are between 35 and 74 years of age; and,

• were told by a doctor that they have high blood pressure:

▸ have a blood pressure that is at least 130/85 if taking medication OR

▸ have a blood pressure that is at least 140/90 if they are NOT taking medication
