- Youth Fishing Events Planned Across the Province -
Islanders are encouraged to rediscover the enjoyment that comes with a day of fishing during the Take Your Family Fishing Weekend this Victoria Day weekend.
George Webster, Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry said no licences will be required to drop a fishing line in the many streams and ponds throughout the province from Friday, May 16, to Monday evening, May 19.
“Fishing is an activity that gives families a chance to spend a few quiet hours together, and it is an opportunity for busy Islanders to escape the daily grind and relax surrounded by the Island’s natural beauty. For many years, it has been my department’s practice to offer families a free weekend of fishing and maybe encourage people curious about the sport of angling to try it for the first time,” said Minister Webster.
As part of Take Your Family Fishing Weekend, the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry is encouraging parents and anyone with an interest in fishing to come out and enjoy angling on the Island’s waterways.
While licences are not required this weekend, all anglers are reminded that they must observe all regulations including catch limits.
If first-time anglers are looking for direction, the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment can provide tips to get started including maps of fishing locations across the province.
People looking for a fishing hole are invited to make use of the new Public Land Atlas or to look for Public Land Signage on Island roads as a way to identify areas of interest.
