Islanders have better access to addictions services

Islanders struggling with addictions now have better access to the supports they need through significantly shorter wait times for inpatient detox programs at the Provincial Addictions Facility, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.

“Ensuring Islanders struggling with addictions have access to the services and programs they need is a clear priority for this government,” said the minister. “Timely access is key in giving Islanders the best opportunities to fight their addictions. By significantly shortening wait times for detox, Islanders can access the supports they need to begin their road to recovery more quickly.”

Wait times for inpatient detox services are now one to three days, down from 15 days last year.

Increased investments in the Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program have helped decrease re-admissions to inpatient detox programs, contributing to the shorter wait times for inpatient detox services and methadone treatment. In addition, a new standardized intake process that is more organized and consistent has been established to better prioritize care and ensure those in most urgent need of care are admitted immediately.

As of this week, there are 14 individuals on the waiting list, compared to 134 on the same list in 2012.

“The new triage system has led to a more organized system, more consistency, and fairness and has also improved nursing utilization on the unit. Now, when an individual calls, information is gathered and can be prioritized appropriately,” said Pam Trainor, executive director of acute care and mental health and addictions at Health PEI.

Improving access to detox services is a key component of government’s commitment to overhaul the way addictions services are provided on Prince Edward Island. Additional investments in programs and services offered post-detox will continue to support Islanders along every aspect of their recovery.

“We recognize that addiction is a growing issue that affects many Islanders and their families,” said the minister. “We know that detox is only one step in the recovery process. That’s why we are also adding resources to other areas of addictions services such as a new transition unit, patient navigator, outreach service and social worker.”
