Islanders are encouraged to participate in Prince Edward Island’s Intergeneration Month storytelling, poetry and song contest, says Minister of Community Services and Seniors Valerie E. Docherty.
“The Seniors’ Secretariat storytelling contest is a wonderful opportunity for Islanders to celebrate the importance of connecting generations,” said Minister Docherty. “We can all learn from the experience and wisdom of adults, as well as the creativity and energy from our young persons.”
Islanders of all ages are invited to celebrate Intergeneration Month 2012 by submitting a story, poem or song that features characters from at least two different generations. Entries may be fiction or non-fiction and must portray positive images of older and younger Islanders. First prize will earn $200, second prize is $150 and third prize will receive a gift certificate. Contest winners will be recognized at an event during Intergeneration Month in October.
Intergeneration Month encourages individuals, families, organizations and communities to strengthen their intergeneration bond through communication, celebration and education. The commemoration began in 2000 and is now being celebrated around the world from North America to Africa to New Zealand.
“Intergeneration Month lets us celebrate people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and experiences, as well as the contributions Islanders offer to their communities,” said Chairperson of the Seniors’ Secretariat Mary Hughes. “The PEI Seniors’ Secretariat is pleased to recognize this special month.”
The deadline for submissions is August 20, 2012. For further contest details phone 1-866-770-0588 or e-mail seniors@gov.pe.ca.
