Islanders encouraged to “Prepare your selfie” for Emergency Preparedness Week

Justice and Public Safety
To increase awareness for the 21st annual Emergency Preparedness Week - May 1- 7, Islanders are being asked to prepare their own emergency plan and 72 hour Emergency Preparedness kit and share it through social media.

“I would like to encourage everyone to make sure they are ready for emergencies by developing a plan and a putting together a preparedness kit with enough supplies to last for the first 72 hours of an emergency,” said the Minister responsible for Justice and Public Safety, Premier Wade MacLauchlan. “Once your kit is prepared share it with all Islanders by posting a selfie with your kit to Facebook or Twitter.”

Islanders can post their images on their own social media sites, tag @peipublicsafety and use the hashtag #peiselfie. Everyone who shares and tags their 72 Hour Emergency Kit “selfie” will be entered into a draw to receive some great prizes from the PEI Emergency Measures Organization. Prizes include crank radio/lanterns and gift cards to local retailers where you can purchase supplies for your kit.

The theme for this year’s Emergency Preparedness week is Plan. Prepare. Be Aware. The goal this year is to encourage all Canadians to take action to protect themselves and their families during emergencies and ensure they have the information they need to keep up to date on factors, like the weather, that might impact day-to-day risks.

“Emergency Preparedness Week is an opportunity for us all to reflect on how we can help reduce the impact of disasters,” said Tanya Mullally, Provincial Emergency Management Coordinator. “Islanders can go to www.PEIPublicSafety.ca to learn more about how to prepare for the risks in our region, and to take stock of how to protect themselves by taking simple steps around their homes and in their communities.”

Be sure to share and tag your “selfie” to celebrate Emergency Preparedness Week by posting to Facebook or Twitter, tag @peipublicsafety and use the hashtag #peiselfie.
