Extreme weather conditions we have seen this week have once again proven that Islanders are there for each other, says Minister of Community Services and Seniors, Valerie E. Docherty.
“Over the last few days I have heard many stories of neighbours helping neighbours dig out of the latest blizzard,” said Minister Docherty. “Inspiring stories of those getting their own homes finally cleared of snow and then making the trek next door or down the road to check on neighbours, particularly seniors and vulnerable Islanders, are happening all across the province.”
“The PEI Seniors’ Secretariat would like to thank plow operators, Maritime Electric, first responders and all those who have worked extremely long hours to ensure Islanders and particularly seniors were safe,” said Mary Hughes, Chairperson for The PEI Seniors’ Secretariat. “To family, friends and neighbours who called, checked in and assisted seniors your act of kindness meant so much.”
Anyone who knows of individuals in their community who may not have the resources or ability to remove the enormous snow drifts that have accumulated around entryways and in driveways, are encouraged to check on their neighbours and lend a helping hand where they can.
“It is during times like these that Islanders truly show their community spirit,” said Ms. Docherty. “I would like to thank everyone who has gone above and beyond for our most vulnerable citizens and encourage everyone to follow their example.”
