Island Trails volunteers are gearing up for another season of great cycling highlighted by their annual spring recreational event cycling sections of the Confederation Trail Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10.
“The Confederation Trail is a great way to lead an active lifestyle and explore our Island,” said Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson. “I encourage all Islanders to participate in this event.”
Participants will cycle 28 kms from Emerald to Kensington and back on Saturday, and then the following day cycle 36 kms from Emerald to Bordon-Carleton return. Cycling begins at the Confederation Trail in Emerald at 11 a.m. both days.
“This is a safe, enjoyable outdoor activity allowing cyclists of all ages and abilities to travel at their own pace along a scenic route in central Prince Edward Island,” says Phil Arbing, chair of the volunteer organizing committee. “Volunteer trail officers accompany cyclists along the way to offer assistance and support when necessary. As well, transportation back to the start can be available if someone prefers to bike one way only.”
Registration per person is $10 for one day and $15 for both days, with a special family rate of $25 for two days. Refreshments are provided and special prizes are drawn each day. Volunteers from Cycle PEI will provide a complimentary pre-ride equipment check for registered cyclists on Saturday morning beginning at 9:30.
This is the fourth year Island Trails has hosted this family-oriented, recreational cycle event. The number of participants increases each year with about 80 cyclists from on and off island registered last year. A similar recreational event cycling the Confederation Trail in eastern Prince Edward Island is slated for September 28-30, 2012.
