Island students are to be congratulated for their efforts in presenting well-researched and informative projects on Prince Edward Island’s and Canada’s culture and heritage at this year’s Provincial Heritage Fair, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.

“More than 170 students from 25 schools participated in this year’s fair, presenting projects on local community history, historic buildings, events and achievements, family history, and individuals who have shaped our history,” said the minister. “Each student, as well as the parents and teachers, should be proud of their accomplishments today.”

The fair was held Thursday, May 10 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Awards were presented to students with the top projects in each grade level. In addition, a number of prizes sponsored by national and location organizations were awarded.

The students awarded for the top projects in each grade level have been invited to participate in the Young Citizens program, sponsored by Canada’s History Society. Each student will receive a video camera and attend a workshop to produce a video on their Heritage Fair project. The videos will be posted online, along with the videos of students from other provincial Heritage Fairs, to be viewed. Visitors to the website will be able to vote for their favourite video. The two students with the most votes from each province and territory will be named finalists and a panel of experts will select six winners to participate in events around the Governor General History Awards in Ottawa.

The following students were recognized during the closing ceremonies:
