It is highly important for all Islanders to be aware of accessibility issues in their communities, says Minister of Community Services and Seniors Valerie E. Docherty.
“As the Minister Responsible for Persons Living with Disabilities, it is an honour for me to participate in the Chair-Leader Event for the second consecutive year,” said Minister Docherty. “Today’s event is not only a valuable educational experience for participants, but it is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the obstacles people with mobility issues face in Prince Edward Island.”
The Chair-Leader Event is organized by the Canadian Paraplegic Association in an effort to create awareness and raise funds. Monetary donations will be used to support the Canadian Paraplegic Association of Prince Edward Island and the service they provide to individuals who struggle with mobility issues in Island communities.
Participants of the Chair-Leaders event spend one day using a wheelchair to gain a first-hand understanding of accessibility obstacles in P.E.I., as well as commit to raising donations for the Association.
“Chair-Leaders have a chance to set a positive example and create awareness about obstacles people with disabilities face on a daily basis,” said Paul Cudmore, Executive Director of the Canadian Paraplegic Association of Prince Edward Island. “We hope this event will create momentum to change our environment into a community that includes everyone.”
