English and French language copies of the educational kit, Canada's Coming of Age 1939-1945, have been purchased for every intermediate and senior high school in the province says Education Minister Gordon MacInnis.
"The years 1939-1945 have been referred to as the most significant six years in Canadian history. It is of utmost importance that Island youth are aware of the events and changes that took place during this period. These years heavily influenced much of what we, as Canadians, have today as well as future directions of the country," said the Minister. "The kit can be used year round to support social studies and language arts curriculum and will tie in nicely with special Remembrance Day activities planned throughout the province."
The educational kit was developed by Veterans Affairs Canada. It contains a comprehensive teachers guide that includes activities, exercises and questions, a six-part National Film Board of Canada video series, a music video and five film vignettes, two Canada Remembers videos, an 80-page colour magazine and four full-colour posters.
While the kit is aimed at grades 7 to 12, there is also a short video that is suitable for elementary students in grades 4 to 6. This video is available to elementary teachers and the public from the Department of Education Media Centre.
Further information and training for the kit will be available at the November 8 province-wide professional development day for teachers.
