The Government of Prince Edward Island, through the Interministerial Women’s Secretariat Grant, is supporting two new projects that will help improve the lives of women and girls in Prince Edward Island announced Janice Sherry, Minister of Community Services, Senior and Labour and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
“These grants will support organizations that provide direct services and programs that will benefit Island girls and women,“ says Minister Sherry. “More specifically, these projects will provide girls and women in Prince Edward Island with necessary information and resources that will assist them with life’s challenges."
Women’s Network PEI has received $49,850 for their project, Building Resilient Girls. This project will raise and enhance self-esteem and confidence in Island girls ages 10-14 in order to build resiliency as a protective factor against becoming involved in violent relationships and achieving healthy outcomes. The project is designed to provide girls and their caregivers with information to support them in dealing with the emotional, social and cultural issues they may face. There will be a number of workshops that will take place across the province, including one in the Francophone community and one in the newcomer’s community.
“The funding provided to Women’s Network PEI will provide programming for girls across PEI to help them develop a strong sense of self and confidence to make good decisions,” says Sandra Nicholson, Chair of Women’s Network PEI. “Women’s Network PEI is thrilled to work with various community partners to take on this challenge.”
East Prince Women’s Information Centre (EPWIC) has received $21,650 for their Caring and Sharing Project. This project will empower women in Western Prince Edward Island who are suffering through times of crisis, distress and transition to take positive action and responsibility for their families. These issues will be addressed by providing mentors and peer support, group support training, and skills development.
“This project will give EPWIC the opportunity to assist vulnerable women through times of crisis, distress, and transition by providing enhanced support services, programs and skills for women to make positive changes,” says Andy Lou Somers, Executive Director of the East Prince Women’s Information Centre.
