Island Golf Course Receives Five Star Rating

It's all in the stars for the Links at Crowbush Cove golf course -- all five of them. Recently, Prince Edward Island's own Links at Crowbush Cove was awarded a five-star rating in Golf Digest's 1998 edition of "Places to Play."

"It is an honor for a Prince Edward Island golf course to be chosen by the golf community as the recipient of such an impressive award," said Premier Pat Binns. "The Links at Crowbush Cove's five-star rating demonstrates the Island's exceptional ability to offer facilities that are second-to-none in all of Canada."

Located in Lakeside, the Links at Crowbush Cove was one of only ten facilities in North America and the only golf course in Canada to receive this prestigious award.

"Being the recipient of Golf Digest's "Places to Play" award, illustrates the high quality and tremendous value Island golf courses such as the Links of Crowbush Cove have to offer both Islanders and visitors," said Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "This award will give one more reason for the skilled and not-so-skilled golfers to visit one of the best golf courses in North America."

The five-star rating was determined by avid golfers who subscribe to Golf Digest. Last summer, ballots were distributed by region to Golf Digest's 1.5 million subscribers. The ballots asked each subscriber to play the public and resort courses in their own areas. Each subscriber was then asked to rate the courses on a scale of one to five based on two criteria: golf experience and the value for their money. More than 18,000 people responded with over 200,000 evaluations. As a result, approximately 5,000 golf courses from across North America were rated. The ballots were translated into a one to five "star" scale, with five being the highest.

The Links at Crowbush Cove is one of the few truly Links courses in North America. It was designed by golf course designer Thomas McBroom and is a golfing experience like no other in Canada. Designed to give a British-links experience, Crowbush's rolling hills and seaside location makes playing a challenge for even the best golfers.

Crowbush hosted the 1997 Canadian amateurs and this summer from July 26 - 28, Crowbush will host the Export 'A' Skins Game. Golf greats Greg Norman, Fred Couples, John Daly and Mike Weir will be at Crowbush to play a challenging round of golf and to try to win some money at the same time.

The Links at Crowbush Cove previously received the best new course in Canada award from Golf Digest in 1994 and was given a 41/2 star rating in 1995 in "Places to Play."
