Island Exhibitors Shine at Fall Fair

* Agriculture, Fisheries & Aquaculture [to Jun 2007]
Prince Edward Island exhibitors were determined that a soggy wet weekend would not dampen their competitive spirit as they brought their livestock to the annual Maritime Fall Fair in Halifax. Several days of steady downpour formed the backdrop for the beef show. However, that made for an attentive ringside as the animals were paraded before judge Hugh Ross of Innisfail, Alberta. Ross is the herdsman at Prime Time Cattle Company, Angus and Charolais breeders who have a 9,000-head feedlot. They are also exhibitors at Agribition in Regina and in recent years have had a Champion Angus at that prestigious Fair as well as raising the Charolais “bull of the year.” Ross, a one time 4-H delegate to Prince Edward Island, was enjoying a return visit as Maritime Fall Fair show judge.

Trevor MacDonald of Murray River as show announcer kept the show flowing and the ringside well informed as to competition winners. Harry Loane of Kilmuir assisted as ringmaster.

Charhaven Lady Primrose 416P owned by Charhaven Farm, Cornwall P.O., P.E.I. caught the judge’s eye and emerged as the overall Supreme Champion Female of the MFF Beef Show. The yearling Charolais heifer started by winning her class, taking the Junior Championship and going on to win the Grand Champion rosette. From there she competed against the other breed champions and went on to be named Supreme overall.

Following are the results of the various breed classes:
