For the second year running, Island compost produced by the province’s Central Compost Facility located in Brookfield has fueled the winning entry in the annual Compost Giants – The Great Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest sponsored by The Composting Council of Canada.
The Composting Council of Canada sponsors this annual national event to demonstrate excellence using locally produced compost. The entry submitted by ADI International (PEI) Inc. (operators of the Central Compost Facility) was judged to be the top entry for the second consecutive year, claiming a $500 prize which is to be donated to a horticultural event of their choice. ADI International (PEI) Inc becomes the first repeat winner in the contest’s history.
“This year’s winner once again shows the positive results by using quality, locally produced compost and the winning entry from ADI does just that,” said Susan Antler, Executive Director of The Composting Council of Canada.
The prize money is being donated by ADI International (PEI) Inc. to the Bedeque Bay Environmental Management Association (BBEMA) to support efforts in restoring a teaching herb garden at the Maple Plains Agri-Environmental Demo Site which was developed over 7 years ago. This garden contains a variety of medicinal and culinary herbs where visitors can use their senses to smell and even taste selected plants. The concept behind this garden is to provide visitors with an appreciation of the importance of plants to people in the past and present, explaining the wide range of uses.
