Compost produced on Prince Edward Island will benefit the PEI Humane Society, thanks to a recent award.
Compost produced by ADI International (PEI) Inc., the operator of the province’s Central Compost Facility, has won first place in a national contest sponsored by the Compost Council of Canada. The Great Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest is an annual competition to promote the benefits of composting and use of locally-produced compost.
This marks the third consecutive year where Island-produced compost has claimed top prize.
With the title of champion comes a $500 cash award which is donated to a local charity or community organization. ADI International (PEI) Inc. will donate this year’s cash prize to the PEI Humane Society to assist in enhancements for their dog park. Previous local beneficiaries of winning prize money from ADI International (PEI) Inc. include the Bedeque Bay Environmental Management Association and the Sir Andrew MacPhail Homestead.
“Locally-produced compost benefits us all and can enrich our environment. Prince Edward Island, through the Waste Watch program, is helping lead the way,” said Susan Antler, Executive Director of the Compost Council of Canada.
“We are very proud of this award and are especially honoured to be the first three-time winner for this contest. It certainly is a positive reflection on the quality compost product consistently being produced here on Prince Edward Island,” said Chris Snively, Facility Manager of ADI International (PEI) Inc.
