A number of Prince Edward Island craftspeople made their annual trip to the Atlantic Craft Trade Show (ACTS) held at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia February 7-9. The trade show presents the opportunity for PEI craft producers to display their products and acquire wholesale orders for the tourist season. During the trade show, the Atlantic Canada Craft Awards for Excellence were presented and this year an Island company was a recipient.

Great Northern Knitters was honoured with the Outstanding Exporter award. This award annually recognizes an Atlantic Canada individual or company who has been pivotal in exporting craft products outside the region. A review committee chose Great Northern Knitters based on their ability to produce products that continue to meet the changing needs of their export market.

"I would like to congratulate Great Northern Knitters on behalf of the Province of Prince Edward Island for achieving the Outstanding Exporter award," said Mitch Murphy, Acting Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "This award not only recognizes the hard work of Great Northern Knitters but it also speaks volumes for the unlimited abilities of the craft industry on PEI."

Great Northern Knitters began 15 years ago on Prince Edward Island and has developed into a successful Island-owned company. They are recognized around the world for their high quality, warm and durable sweaters. Annually, approximately 10,000 wool sweaters are hand-knit by the employees of Great Northern Knitters.

"Our world-class quality products are handmade in Charlottetown by the cream of the Island's knitters, " said Robert Cumming, President of Great Northern Knitters. "Their commitment and skill allowed us to qualify for this award and win it. This very positive recognition from our peers is a much appreciated source of encouragement for everyone here."

Other Island craft exhibitors recognized by the ACTS committee included: Cass Craft of PEI Ltd., D Major Fabric Studio Ltd., Island Winds and Queens County Blacksmith. Each company received a special ten-year pin for their participation in the craft trade show.

The trade show began over 21 years ago and has grown to be one of the most well-respected and highest quality craft/giftware trade shows in Canada today. In 1997, the event recorded wholesale figures of over $1.3 million.
