A new provincial government investment is being used to create the Wellington Bike Park and upgrade the Miscouche Fire Department and the Centre Belle Alliance soccer and softball fields, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair.
“These projects are important to communities,” said the minister. “Providing modern athletic facilities for youth helps build active rural communities. Modernizing the training area for the Miscouche Fire Department will help firefighters better protect the 200 square kilometer area they serve.”
The total cost of the three projects is $111,000. The Island Community Fund is contributing approximately $44,000. A further $15,000 will come from the Department of Health and Wellness through the Community Recreation Support Program. Community sponsors will provide $51,700 overall.
The Miscouche Volunteer Fire Department will benefit from renovations to its training room which will allow the 24 volunteer firefighters to better prepare for the wide range of responses they handle each year. The total cost of this project is $15,825. The Island Community Fund is contributing $7,900.
The Municipality of Wellington is developing a bike park for youth in the community at a cost of $77,450. The Island Community Fund is contributing $29,340 to this project. A further $7,500 will come from the Department of Health and Wellness through the Community Recreation Support Program.
The Centre Belle Alliance soccer field and softball field in Summerside served as the location for provincial tryouts for the Island delegation to the 2011 Acadian Games and needed to be upgraded. The Island Community Fund is contributing $7,120 to this project. A further $7,500 will come from the Department of Health and Wellness through the Community Recreation Support Program.
“The youth in this region of the province will benefit from these projects for years to come and the region will continue to be well served by the local volunteer firefighters,” said Minister LeClair.
The Island Community Fund is a six-year, $27.5 million program established by the provincial government to address infrastructure needs with a focus on rural communities.
