Island Beef Captures Top Honours

* Agriculture, Fisheries & Aquaculture [to Jun 2007]
“These are tough times in the beef industry but we will come out of this. Who will step up to the plate to make it happen – we don’t know – but we’ll be better for it.” Such was the encouraging note from Judge George Early from Kerwood, Ontario as he wrapped up the judging of the beef classes at the Maritime Fall Fair held in Halifax during the Thanksgiving weekend. Early sent eight Premier Breeder/Exhibitor awards home with Prince Edward Island beef exhibitors.

In the Simmental Breed, Spud Island Farms of York Point brought home both Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners. Out front for them was their yearling heifer SPUD ISLAND NORMA 45N who took the Junior Champion Female title and went on to be Reserve Champion Female. Taking the Grand Champion ribbon was the winner of the two-year-old class SPUD ISLAND MISS RED 48M. Kinghurst Simmentals of RR 10 Winsloe stepped up to take the Grand Champion Male spot with KINGHURST BLACK PERFECTOR 6N, and pulling into Reserve Champion Male place was SPUD ISLAND NORMAN 46N.
