Minister of Education, Honourable Chester Gillan, would like to recognize September 8, as International Literacy Day. International Literacy Day reminds the world of the value of literacy in our everyday lives. Minister Gillan commends all Island businesses who have partnered with Workplace Education PEI, to provide literacy opportunities in the workplace.
"I applaud Island businesses who provide learning opportunities for their employees," says Minister Gillan. "Enhancing literacy levels in the workplace will help businesses and their employees achieve greater success."
Minister Gillan recently recognized two Island businesses for supporting a learning culture among employees, through their participation in the workplace education program. Employees of Durabelt Inc., of Montague and the PEI Carpenters' Union have successfully completed the workplace education program.
The workplace education program takes a non-traditional approach to learning which includes a range of customized literacy and upgrading programs for employees. Classes usually take place at the work site, fully or partially on work time. Workplace Education PEI in partnership with business, industry, labour and government, promotes basic training with literacy as its foundation.
Island businesses interested in supporting literacy initiatives in the workplace should contact Workplace Education PEI at 368-6280.
