Today we join the United Nations and countries throughout the world to recognize the rights and the unique challenges that girls face in our society, says Valerie E. Docherty, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
“By recognizing today as International Day of the Girl Child, we have an opportunity to raise public awareness of the different types of discrimination and abuse that affects many girls right here in Prince Edward Island,” said Ms. Docherty. “For example, social media is widely used in many households but must be used with care. Through education and action, we can take steps to build a safer environment for girls.”
The United Nations has designated October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child, and the theme for 2013 is Innovating for Girls’ Education.
The Cybersafe Girl campaign provides information and tools to girls, families and educators to protect from cyber violence, sexual risk and harm, and online sexual predators. The website, www.cybersafegirl.ca, provides practical tips and tools and can help girls understand the risks associated and learn how to be safe online.
“I encourage parents and caregivers to sit down with their children to review and sign the online safety agreement found on the website. Educators will also find the material useful to share with their students.” said Ms. Docherty. “I am pleased to work with my colleagues, the Atlantic Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women in Canada, on this regional, bilingual public education program to advance online safety.”
