Innovation PEI and ACOA partner to offer business training for newcomers

A series of immigrant-focused business training sessions beginning February 5 will allow new Islanders to learn more about starting and operating a business in Prince Edward Island, Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allan Campbell and ACOA Minister Keith Ashfield said today.

“This is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs who are new to the province to get information about growing a business in Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Campbell. “Helping immigrant entrepreneurs establish businesses was one of the goals that government set out in the Settlement Strategy, and these sessions are an important step toward achieving that goal.”

The eight sessions are being offered by Innovation PEI in partnership with the PEI Association for Newcomers, the Atlantic Canadian Opportunities Agency, University of Prince Edward Island, ProfitLearn PEI, and the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce.

“The economy is our government’s top priority and by investing in programs such as the training sessions from ProfitLearn PEI, we will succeed in continuing to strengthen our economy,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.

The sessions will be held in February and March, and offer instruction on preparing a business plan; taxes, laws and registration; best practices for success; Island organizations that assist businesses; and other practical information about operating a business in Prince Edward Island.

“Many of our immigrant clients owned businesses in their home country and would like to do the same in PEI,” said Lisa Hill, PEIANC Employment Program Coordinator. “Training sessions like this will provide the skills and knowledge they need to move forward with business plans.”
