Increase in advance voting

The number of persons voting on the first Advance Poll on Saturday 25, 2104 shows an increase in voter turnout over historical numbers from previous elections in Charlottetown, Summerside and Cornwall. “Saturday was a busy day for the election workers,” states Chief Electoral Officer Gary McLeod. “There was a large increase in voter turnout from what we have observed in previous elections during the first day of Advance polls. This does not necessarily mean an increase in overall voter turnout at this point, just those who chose to vote, voted early.” Stratford saw a slight decrease in their numbers but there are only two Wards with elections for Councillor. The Mayor and two (2) councillors for Ward 3 were acclaimed.

Charlottetown: 800 in 2010 / 1606 in 2014

Summerside: 400 in 2010 / 590 in 2014

Stratford: 190 in 2010 / 176 in 2014

Cornwall: 120 in 2010 / 270 in 2014

With the high voter turnout, there were some delays at the polling locations. There have been some modifications to the process in attempts to alleviate some of the delays with the future polling days. Cornwall was an extremely busy poll as voters had to chose up to six councillors on the ballot. Additional election staff have been added to minimize any waiting times.

Advance polls are currently taking place today Monday October 27 and the last day of Advance Polls is Saturday November 1, 2014. All polls are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
