Inaugural conference showcases Island business opportunities

Economic Development and Tourism
Companies from across the Atlantic to right here at home will soon gather for the first time to learn about the many business opportunities that exist in Prince Edward Island, Economic Development and Tourism Minister Heath MacDonald said.

“As we work to grow the province’s economy, we need to encourage companies from elsewhere to relocate or expand here – but also to help our existing companies thrive,” Minister MacDonald said. “This innovative conference will bring together the best of Prince Edward Island to help tell the story of why this is such a great place to do business.”

Hosted by Innovation PEI, the Opportunities in Canada 2016 conference will draw more than 50 delegates from March 13 to 15. It will include our own Island companies as well as those from across Canada, the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom who have expressed interest in relocating to the province in the past year.

“We are excited to participate in this event on Prince Edward Island and look forward to meeting potential business partners – and growing our presence on PEI as a result,” said Paul Jamer, CEO of Breakwater Management. The Charlottetown-based company provides sales and business development services for five marine-related clients out of the Launchpad PEI space at the Atlantic Technology Centre.

Other Island companies participating in the conference are Nautican Research and Development, Portsmouth Atlantic, MarineNav, Aspin Kemp and Associates, and NorCan Marine. The cities of Charlottetown and Summerside as well as Holland College and the University of Prince Edward Island will also be represented.

Although this is the first conference aimed at expanding multiple business sectors in Prince Edward Island, Innovation PEI has in previous years held events targeted at specific markets including aerospace and advanced manufacturing.

Presentations will include panel discussions on the challenges faced by companies, financing and research and development, marine HR methods and successes, and setting a company apart through innovation. Individual companies also will share their experiences doing business on the Island.
