* Education [to Apr 2008]
Minister of Education Gordon MacInnis announced today the official appointment of the Honourable Alexander Campbell as Honourary Chair of the 1996 Prince Edward Island Heritage Fair. The Heritage Fair is a component of The CRB Foundation’s Heritage Project, a long-term educational program designed to increase a sense of Canadian pride and identity in youth by stimulating a greater interest in Canada’s past. Mr. Campbell will be responsible for the overall direction and management of this unique event that provides Islanders with an opportunity to reflect on Canadian heritage through the eyes of PEI students.

"It gives me tremendous pleasure to announce this appointment. Alex Campbell was the ideal choice for the position given his long standing involvement in the preservation and promotion of this province’s heritage," said Minister MacInnis whose portfolio includes culture and heritage. "During his term as Premier from 1966-1978, he was instrumental in establishing the Prince Edward Island Heritage Foundation." Following his resignation as Premier of the province in 1978, Mr. Campbell returned to his law practice. In that same year he was appointed judge of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. He retired from the Supreme Court in 1994.

The Prince Edward Island Heritage Fair is scheduled for May 24 and 25, 1996 in Slemon Park. It is a multi-media exhibition developed to increase awareness and interest in Canadian history. The primary focus of the Fair is to encourage students to use various media to tell stories and share information about their heritage. It will involve 300 students and 50 to 60 teachers from the Eastern, Western and Francophone school boards as direct participants. As well, thousands of additional students are expected to be involved as spectators or participants within their schools.
