The Honourable Keith Milligan was sworn in as Prince Edward Island's 31st Premier since Confederation, in a ceremony today at Government House in Charlottetown, presided over by the Honourable Chief Justice Norman Carruthers.
Mr. Milligan, a resident of Inverness, is the current Member of the Legislative Assembly for the district of 2nd Prince. He was chosen as the new leader of the governing Liberal Party at a convention in Charlottetown on Saturday, October 5, 1996 to replace outgoing Premier Catherine Callbeck.
Along with Mr. Milligan, the following Members of the Executive Council were also appointed:
Robert J. Morrissey to be Minister of Economic Development and Tourism;
Wayne D. Cheverie Q.C. to be Deputy Premier and Provincial Treasurer;
Gordon E. MacInnis to be Minister of Education;
Barry W. Hicken to be Minister of Environmental Resources;
Paul J. Connolly to be Minister of Higher Education, Training and Adult Learning;
Walter Bradley to be Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry;
Walter MacEwen Q.C. to be Minister of Health and Social Services;
Lynwood MacPherson to be Minister of Provincial Affairs.
Along with his duties as Premier and President of Executive Council, Mr. Milligan will also assume responsibility as Minister of Transportation and Public Works.
In naming his Cabinet, the new Premier said he has decided not to make major changes to the Cabinet at this particular time.
