The Health PEI board of directors has appointed Dr. Michael Mayne as the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2016, says Health PEI board chair Phyllis Horne.
“The board of directors is very pleased to welcome Dr. Mayne to Health PEI,” said Ms. Horne. “He will bring strong leadership to our organization, which is essential during challenging times. His extensive knowledge of the PEI health system and his experience as Deputy Minister will bring needed continuity to our work and allow us to continue the many important initiatives we have underway with minimal disruption.”
Health PEI’s board of directors spent the last several months following a process before appointing Dr. Mayne. He will fill the position made vacant by Dr. Richard Wedge who is retiring in the spring. “I want to thank Dr. Wedge for his invaluable service and contributions to Health PEI and our health care system over the years, and wish him well in his retirement,” added Ms. Horne.
Minister of Health and Wellness Robert Henderson said that the next few weeks will be a transition period as Dr. Wedge prepares to retire and a new deputy minister is appointed. “We will certainly miss Michael’s leadership at the department but welcome the contribution he will continue to add in his new role at Health PEI,” said the minister.
“I have great respect for the staff at all levels of Health PEI,” said Dr. Mayne. “I look forward very much to working more closely with them to build on the excellent work they have been doing to improve health outcomes and the patient experience.”
Dr. Mayne will continue to serve as Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness until he assumes his role as Health PEI CEO on April 1st.
Dr. Mayne was raised in Emerald, Prince Edward Island. He received his undergraduate degree from UPEI and his PhD from the University of Toronto. He furthered his training in infectious disease and pharmacology at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland and the University of Manitoba where he taught for several years in the medical and pharmacy schools.
He returned to Prince Edward Island in 2007 as the founding Director of Research for the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute of Nutrisciences and Health and later joined the provincial government as Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Innovation.
In 2011, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness. In this role, he held several senior positions, including co-chair of the national Premier’s Working Group on Health Care Innovation. Dr. Mayne has also served on many national boards and is currently the provincial-territorial Deputy Minister liaison to the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
Dr. Mayne, his wife Laura and their three children live in Charlottetown.
