Have You Checked Your Brakes Today?

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
This week the Prince Edward Island Department of Transportation and Public Works will team up with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and trucking organizations across the province to help educate truckers on the importance of safe brakes.

Brake Safety Week is an annual event that focusses on enhancing knowledge, regulatory compliance and performance of commercial vehicle braking systems. CVSA certified inspectors, brake suppliers and industry partners will conduct enforcement and education activities at truck stops, weigh stations and other locations across the Maritimes. Braking system inspections will take place on vehicles in an informal, non-prosecution, educational basis.

The event aims to help reduce the number of highway crashes caused by faulty braking systems on commercial vehicles. It focusses on the importance of proper brake inspection, maintenance and operation. Officials will carry out inspections with the drivers to educate them on proper inspection procedure and proper operation of braking systems.

“Our number one objective is to keep Island roads safe,” says Ron MacKinley, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. “These kinds of informal, educational campaigns are very useful as a way to remind truckers about the importance of proper maintenance and operation of commercial vehicle brake systems.”

Minister MacKinley says this event would not be possible without the support of the PEI Trucking Sector Council, the PEI Truckers Association, the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Council and local repair shops.
