Groundfish Conservation Framework

P.E.I. Fisheries and Environment Minister Kevin MacAdam has noted the release of the Groundfish Conservation Framework prepared by the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC). "This is a substantial document which addresses a wide range of groundfish conservation requirements in comprehensive fashion," observed the Minister.

The Strategy sets out a framework for the conservation of Atlantic Canadian groundfish resources into the future, including goals and principles to be applied, and identifies conservation measures which might be applied to meet these goals. The choice and application of specific measures in any area would be left to industry and government managers through the existing advisory process for groundfish stocks.

"I commend the FRCC for undertaking such an initiative," the Minister stated. "I look forward to reviewing the document in detail and hearing the views of our industry as we consider how best to manage a fully re-opened Gulf groundfish fishery in the future" he said.
