Grade one students receive book from Public Library Service

Education, Early Learning and Culture
Well-known illustrator Dušan Petričić, along with author Cary Fagan, will be visiting Charlottetown on November 7 as part of an initiative that sees 1500 books handed out to Island Grade One students, says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Hal Perry.

“All English and French Grade One students will receive a free copy of Mr. Zinger’s Hat, a Canadian children’s book,” said Minister Perry. “The Public Library Service works to make reading fun for the whole family, and this annual giveaway provides a great opportunity for kids and parents to read together.”

TD Grade One Book Giveaway Program is an annual initiative, supported by the Public Library Service and the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. The program is intended to encourage literacy for young children and also brings great Canadian books to Canadian children, to promote a love of reading and a passion for books.

This fall, Grade One children nation-wide will take home Mr. Zinger's Hat (Le chapeau de M. Zinger), written by Cary Fagan and published by Tundra Books. The story, complemented by the imaginative illustrations of artist Dušan Petričić, will delight young readers who enjoy spinning their own stories. It is available to students in both official languages.

On Saturday, November 7, Dušan Petričić and Cary Fagan will be at the Confederation Centre Public Library. They will read their book to families and chat about how they created the book. After that, families will be able to participate in a craft activity to make and decorate their own paper hats. There will be a limited supply of the book available for free for participants of any age.

“The Public Library Service supports all Islanders to develop life-long love of reading and to provide families with more opportunities to read together” said Minister Perry. “The TD Grade One Book Giveaway Program is another great example of the Public Library Service supporting Island families.”
