Grade 1 students at Glen Stewart Elementary proudly showed off their new classrooms to parents, Stratford residents and dignitaries at the school's open house today. The new addition to Glen Stewart is being used by Grade 1 students and consists of five new classrooms, one resource room, one medical room, one teacher planning centre, offices, washrooms, a storage area and a mechanical room. In addition, all windows in the existing school were replaced with energy efficient windows.
Grade 1 students Meghan Newson and Nathan Trainor led Premier Pat Binns, Minister of Education Chester Gillan and Provincial Treasurer and MLA for Glen Stewart-Bellevue Cove Pat Mella on a tour through their new classrooms.
"The new addition to Glen Stewart School addresses the school's serious over-crowding problems," said Minister Gillan. "This is good news for the community of Stratford — we're building more classrooms for children and demonstrating government's commitment to creating better teaching environments in PEI."
Premier Binns noted that he is very pleased with the progress of the school construction and repair plan. "This is the most ambitious school construction plan in the province's history and the results thus far are outstanding. Repairing and building new schools will strengthen Island communities."
Minister Gillan thanked Gillian Attema, President of the Glen Stewart Home and School, and her group, for their hard work and cooperation throughout the entire project.
Minister of Transportation and Public Works Mike Currie, Wilbur MacDonald, MLA for Belfast-Pownal Bay, David McCabe, Superintendent, Eastern School District and Glen Stewart Home and School members also took part in the official ceremony and open house.
