Governor of Hainan visits Prince Edward Island

Premier's Office
Prince Edward Island received a visit this week from Governor Jiang Dingzhi, Hainan Province, People’s Republic of China and His Excellency Zhang Junsai, Ambassador of China to Canada, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

“Being sister provinces with the Province of Hainan is an honour in which our Island takes great pride,” said Premier Ghiz. “There are many natural links between Prince Edward Island and Hainan. We are both small Island provinces with tourism and golf industries who are anxious to embrace innovation and economic growth, but both still remain fondly attached to our heritage as farming and fishing communities.”

The Province of Prince Edward Island renewed its Friendship-Province Relationship Agreement with the Hainan Province last year on the 10-year anniversary. Over the past decade, Prince Edward Island has benefited from this agreement in many ways including post-secondary education student exchanges, faculty and curriculum exchanges, information technology advancements, tourism and golf industry development, and through several trade missions.

Governor Jiang Dingzhi and members of Hainan Delegation spent their visit meeting with Island farmers, leaders from P.E.I.’s business community, government officials and Islanders from the Chinese community.

“Our Chinese connection continues to grow as a result of the contributions made by immigrants within our province,” said Premier Ghiz. “This growing Chinese community is contributing greatly to the social and economic fabric of our province and strengthening our relationship with the Province of Hainan.”
