The Government of Canada joined the Province of Prince Edward Island today to announce that construction of four new affordable housing projects is underway across the province.
The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Prince Edward Island’s Minister of Community Services, Seniors and Labour Janice Sherry, made the announcement today in Summerside.
“Our Government is dedicated to giving a hand-up to Canadians in need, and we are pleased to have invested in the construction of these new housing projects,” said Minister Shea. “For seniors across the Island, and here in Summerside, these rental units are more than just an affordable place to live. They are key to a better life for seniors, close to family and friends.”
The development of the four housing projects is made possible through a federal investment of more than $1.6 million from the Affordable Housing Trust. There will be a total of 41 affordable seniors housing units built as a result of two projects in Charlottetown, one project in Summerside and one in O'Leary.
“The four housing projects announced today will provide many seniors across Prince Edward Island with the opportunity to live in a modern, safe and affordable home,” said Minister Sherry. “These projects confirm our government’s continued commitment to invest in our seniors.”
Rose Hill Place in Summerside will be supported with $400,000 in Affordable Housing Trust capital funding; the 10-unit building will include seven
one-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units. The creation of a project at Elena Court in Charlottetown will receive $930,000 in funding; the 24-unit building will include 18 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom units. An O’Leary project will receive $270,000 in Affordable Housing Trust funding; the six-unit building will include four one-bedroom units and two one-bedroom units and $40,000 in funding will support a two-bedroom, single unit on King Street in Charlottetown.
