The Government of Prince Edward Island is one step closer to redeveloping the Charlotte Court Senior Citizens’ Complex in Charlottetown, announced Honourable Janice Sherry, Minister of Community Services, Seniors and Labour.
Last week Minister Sherry announced that plans to replace Charlotte Court were moving ahead and today the Department released a Request for Expressions of Interest for private contractors regarding proposals to replace Charlotte Court.
“This is an important achievement as the project moves closer to the development of a new modern, energy-efficient home for the residents of Charlotte Court,” said Minister Sherry. “The project will see the development of a new facility for seniors and will ensure there is no increase to the amount seniors currently pay to rent these affordable housing units and no public sector jobs will be lost.”
“This announcement is good news for the residents of Charlotte Court,” said Honourable Kathleen Casey, MLA for Charlottetown-Lewis Point area. “I have been working closely with the department and am pleased with today’s announcement that this project is moving forward.”
The model would include the following:
• The property will be purchased by the developer.
• The new facility will be developed and owned by the developer.
• The department will continue to work directly with the tenants.
• Funding from the Canada Economic Action Plan is available to developers to help reduce the costs of construction in order to maintain affordable rents.
“We are committed to ongoing dialogue with residents of Charlotte Court and have met with residents to discuss plans for the new building,” said Minister Sherry. “We believe that it is important to engage current residents in future planning so that they have an opportunity to give their input into the project, which will be their future home.”
The deadline for proposals from developers is April 16, 2010. A final decision on the details of the project will be made as soon as possible. Construction is expected to begin this summer to have the new affordable units in operation by May 2011.
