Government increases support for Home Heating Program

The provincial government will once again provide financial support to the Salvation Army’s home heating program, says Premier Wade MacLauchlan.

“We are pleased to support the Salvation Army as it reaches out to help Islanders in need,” said Premier MacLauchlan. “As a government, we are committed to work in partnership with community groups to help ensure the well-being of all Islanders.”

The home heating program was developed eight years ago to help ease the burden of energy costs and to provide support to Islanders who are in urgent need of home heating fuel. The program is delivered by the Salvation Army and applicants are assessed to identify those most in need.

The provincial government is contributing a total of $136,200 to the program, an increase of $15,000 over last year. The PEI Petroleum Marketers Association also provides support by donating 8,000 litres of home heating oil. This year, the Association has also raised $3,000 from its members to donate to this valuable program.

“We appreciate and value our partnerships with the Salvation Army and the PEI Petroleum Marketers Association to help support Islanders who need it most,” said Minister of Family and Human Services, Doug Currie.

Since 2008, the province has provided more than $1 million to this program and has helped, on average, 369 households per year with heating costs. The program will begin in the New Year. Islanders can contact the Salvation Army for more information about how to apply for the program.
