The Honourable Chester Gillan, Minister of Health, today announced that a new Medical Services Centre is being planned for the Tyne Valley area as part of government’s ongoing commitment to health care and improving access to services for Islanders.

A recent Community Needs Assessment and consultation with medical professionals in the Tyne Valley area determined a need for a new Medical Services Centre in the community. The Centre would allow for the integration of health professionals in one location.

“Government is prepared to commit to the construction of a new medical services centre in Tyne Valley. A new facility would provide appropriate space to allow physicians and nurses to work together with other health professionals in areas such as addictions and mental health,” said Minister Gillan. “This collaborative working approach will ensure that appropriate health services are accessible to the residents of Tyne Valley.”

A new medical centre would complement existing services offered in Stewart Memorial Hospital.

“We will be looking to partner with the community and the federal government to fund this important initiative, “ added Minister Gillan. “The province looks forward to working with the community of Tyne Valley in this important initiative as it is part of government’s ongoing commitment to providing access to healthcare for all Islanders.”

“As MLA for the area, I’m very pleased to see such a progressive new facility which will provide medical assistance to area residents,” noted Philip Brown, Minister of Tourism and MLA for Cascumpec-Grand River. “Recognizing the many challenges surrounding quality health care, this announcement ensures that the Tyne Valley region is provided with a high standard of medical services and programs required within the community.”

A planning committee will be formed in the coming weeks and will include representatives from Stewart Memorial Hospital Board, the community, and government.
