The Provincial Library Service received a special gift today of ten Storysacks through a unique family literacy partnership.
Storysacks are colourful hand-made cloth sacks containing a book, toys and props which bring a story to life and enrich the reading experience for children and parents.
Storysacks coordinator Lori Johnston advised that Storysacks are a new concept in family literacy. They were originally developed to assist parents who had literacy difficulties or who lacked confidence in their reading ability. "The Storysacks were so popular that they are now widely used by many parents, teachers, librarians, and speech and language professionals," said Ms Johnston.
Many individuals and organizations are now working together to make Storysacks available to Island families including the PEI Women's Institute, PEI Literacy Alliance, Department of Education, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, PEI Correctional Centre, and the Early Childhood Development Association. "This is a fine example of people working together in our communities to promote literacy. It is very valuable work because literacy skills are the foundation skills for lifelong learning," said Education Minister Chester Gillan. "The Storysacks are great because they make learning fun and easy for both children and parents."
Provincial Correctional Centre education officer Joan MacFarlane advised that inmates were involved in making the Storysacks donated to the libraries and they continue to enjoy making them. "The response to the Storysacks program from staff and inmates has been extremely positive. In fact, one staff member referred to Storysacks as the best program we ever had," said Ms. MacFarlane.
Provincial librarian Allan Groen advised that the Storysacks are now available at all public libraries, and library technicians are trained to help people use them. "The libraries are very appreciative of these excellent new resources for parents and caregivers to promote family literacy," he said.
