The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Canada, His Excellency Werner Wnendt, has completed an official two-day visit to Prince Edward Island, says Premier Robert Ghiz.
“Prince Edward Island has a strong trading relationship with Germany and the European Union, and there are significant opportunities for further growth in trade and investment and to strengthen cooperation in science and technology,” said Premier Ghiz. “The recent agreement in principle between Canada and the European Union of a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement will provide significant benefits to existing and new exporters.”
Prince Edward Island exports to Germany last year were $14 million, the second highest behind the United Kingdom in the European Union. The main exports were fish and seafood, aerospace, bioscience and agriculture products. The Canada-EU trade agreement will eliminate tariffs on almost all agriculture, seafood and industrial products. The European Union is Prince Edward Island’s second largest trading partner.
Following a courtesy call to Government House on Thursday morning, Ambassador Wnendt met with Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley; Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allen Roach; and Agriculture and Forestry Minister George Webster. He also met with representatives of Holland College, the University of Prince Edward Island and the National Research Council to discuss expanding cooperation in science, technology, research and innovation.
During his visit, the ambassador also met with representatives of the business community and key exporters, including those in the agriculture, seafood and other key sectors of the economy.
“The visit by Ambassador Wnendt provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen and expand trade and investment relations,” said Premier Ghiz. “A finalized trade agreement will provide major benefits to all sectors of the Prince Edward Island economy.”
