December 11, 2015 Health and WellnessThe Chief Public Health Office has determined norovirus as the most likely cause of a gastro-intestinal illness associated with three functions held at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel on December 5, 2015.As of this afternoon, there were 134 reports of illness; however the number of cases has subsided with only a few cases now being reported.Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie said the Chief Public Health Office is completing its investigation. “Public health is a critical element of our health care system and I am confident that every effort is being made to protect the health of the public” he said.The Chief Public Health Office established an outbreak team on December 8 following initial reports of illness. The team sent questionnaires to all those in attendance, including guests and hotel staff. Stool samples and food samples were collected. Environmental Health staff conducted onsite inspections and evaluation and are working closely with hotel staff to ensure safe food handling. Symptoms reported include nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Recovery continues to be within 1-2 days and there have been no hospitalizations.Media Contact: Samantha Hughes
