Residents of Souris will soon be welcoming a new doctor to the Souris Hospital. Dr. Olumayokun Oluwole Oluyede arrives in Souris on February 1 and will begin his practice out of the Health Clinic at the Souris Hospital, starting February 4. Dr. Oluyede was born in Nigeria and has been practising medicine in Whyalla, Australia since January, 2006.
Last fall, Dr. Oluyede came to Souris for site visits at the Hospital and was able to get to know the community. He was extremely impressed with the welcome he received. Dr. Oluyede’s wife, Kemi, who is a nurse, and their four children will also be making the move to Souris. They currently reside in upstate New York and will be joining Dr. Oluyede in February. The family hopes to get settled in this winter and are looking forward to summer in eastern Prince Edward Island.
“In keeping with our Premier’s election promise of increasing the number of doctors on PEI, and thanks to the hard work by the recruitment professionals in the Department of Health, we were able to secure a new doctor for Souris residents,” said Health Minister, Doug Currie. “Physician recruitment is a very competitive process and remains a priority for this Government. Dr. Oluyede’s decision to come to Souris shows that rural communities on the Island have a great deal to offer physicians, not only professionally, but also for the quality of life this province can provide to their families.”
The upcoming arrival of Dr. Oluyede means there are now three full time doctors in Souris. A full complement of doctors for the area is four and recruitment efforts continue to ensure that target is met. It is anticipated that the full complement will be reached by early spring.
