Four Projects Approved for Youth Computer Program

Technology PEI Inc., in partnership with KenNet Inc., has approved four projects for its award winning Between Generations program.

Recognized by an Industry Canada's CanConnect Award for Excellence in fostering information and communication technology skills in youth and their communities, Between Generations requires youth meet with other generations to discuss historically significant events and create web sites based on their research.

This is the third year for the program which has helped youth develop web creation and interviewing skills and provided seniors with an opportunity to connect with youth and further their knowledge of the Internet.

The four youth groups that will receive assistance in this round of the program are: the Cotton Youth Centre from Stratford, who will profile the history of the Robert Cotton Park; the Crapaud CAP site, who will examine the Kelly's Cross Tea Party, an annual event that dates back 110 years and still attracts family and friends back to the area; the Bluefield High School Drama Club, who will capture the emotions and thoughts on VE day in 1945; and the Cardigan CAP site, who will show how technology has affected various careers in the area.

"I am looking forward to seeing these new websites," said the Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology. "So far twenty seven (27) youth organizations from across Prince Edward Island have completed web sites and

preserved interesting stories from our province's past, ranging from what it was like to go to school in the one room school house to the marine and rail history of Borden-Carleton."

Their stories and web sites can be viewed at http://www.techpei.com.

Applicants to the program must be a recognized youth group or be affiliated with a youth group. Funding to a maximum of $4000 is provided to the group for the purposes of equipment purchases, staffing, or other expenditures necessary to complete the project.

Between Generations is a special initiative by Technology PEI under its strategic mandate to increase community preparedness for the new knowledge-based economy.

Technology PEI is the Government of Prince Edward Island's lead agency in the development, adoption and use of information technologies in business and community in the province.
