Food Technology Centre Receives Award

The Food Technology Centre (FTC) in Charlottetown has received a prestigious international award from the American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC). The Association has given FTC the award for the accuracy of its analysis. FTC was the most accurate of all the laboratories in the world participating in the AACC check sample program for fat, fatty acids and cholesterol.

International companies as well as private and government laboratories are eligible for this award and its importance is recognized world-wide.

“The Food Technology Centre is proud to receive this award from AACC in recognition of the quality of the work that we do on behalf of the food and bioprocessing sectors on Prince Edward Island,” said Jim Smith, FTC’s executive director. “It confirms the effectiveness of our ISO 9001:2000 quality management system and accreditation from the Standards Council of Canada.”

FTC participates in the AACC check sample program as part of its laboratory quality control procedures. The check samples are provided to the FTC laboratory for analysis, and the technologists at the laboratory perform the various tests on the samples without prior knowledge of the composition of the samples. These results are then submitted to AACC who then compare the results of all the laboratories worldwide.

FTC’s chemistry laboratory provides support on technical projects carried out by FTC on behalf of PEI processors. The accuracy of the results demonstrates the dependability of the work done on contract for the Centre’s clients.

“The Food Technology Centre is an important part of the infrastructure for the support and growth of the food and bioresource manufacturing sectors on Prince Edward Island, and I congratulate the team at the Centre for their outstanding achievement in receiving this award,” said Development and Technology Minister Mike Currie.
