Focus on Resources, the provincial government's community outreach program on cable television, will air a feature on the Year 2000 Computer Compatibility Issue (Y2K) on April 13. The feature will include government's role in the Y2K problem, what businesses can do and a guide for the homeowner in PEI.
The features will include representatives from both provincial and federal governments in the province. They will review government programs related to Y2K including sources of information, creating awareness and alleviating the problem. The business section will highlight areas of concern for Island businesses and look at what is involved in a business Y2K assessment. Both of these sections will focus on assessments and business continuity planning.
The homeowner section will feature the two largest utilities in PEI, Maritime Electric and Island Tel. They will discuss their progress in dealing with their Y2K problems and plans for the future.
The millennium bug series will provide a basis of understanding and awareness among Islanders. Learning about the Y2K bug and how it may affect us is the first step in addressing the problem.
The Y2K computing problem stems from the practise of representing the year as a two digit code instead of four. When 00 is entered for the year 2000, the date may be misinterpreted as 1900 or may cause a system to fail.
Tuesday's show will also feature Prince Edward Island's apprenticeship program, The Prince County Exhibition, Futures in Marketing and Soil Conservation Efforts plus coverage with host Whit Carter and his guests from the Annual Salmon Association's Charity Auction and Banquet.
Focus on Resources will air its last show of the season on April 13. The show airs at 7:00 pm, immediately following the local CBC news, on Community Cable channels across the province. The show features the latest news and information on agriculture, fisheries, small business, tourism, aquaculture, forestry, the environment and the Knowledge Economy Partnership. Focus on Resources will resume airing in the fall.
