Maritime fisheries ministers met with federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea in Halifax today to discuss the industry, market challenges and future co-operation in marketing.

“We realize that we all must work together to see the industry through these difficult economic times,” said Ron Chisholm, Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister. “This meeting allowed us to discuss how we can work with industry to assist them in regards to boat loans with provincial loan boards and other financial institutions.”

Mr. Chisholm was joined by Rick Doucet, New Brunswick Minister of Fisheries and Allan Campbell, Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development for Prince Edward Island.

“This was an excellent opportunity to discuss how we can work collaboratively to market and promote our products, both domestically and internationally,” said Mr. Doucet.

“This meeting allowed us to have an overview of each of our provincial industries and to get an idea of the outlook for markets over the next few months,” said Mr. Campbell. “We know there is an immediate need to address the challenges facing our lobster industry in the marketplace.”

Atlantic Canadian lobsters provide a high-quality product for the marketplace.

The ministers agreed it was beneficial meeting face to face. They agreed to co-operate to expand markets and assist the industry through these tough times.
