Final Public Meeting on Electoral Reform

The Prince Edward Island Commission on Electoral Reform is holding a Final Public Meeting on Thursday, November 20, 2003 in lecture theatre "A" at the Atlantic Veterinary College. The meeting will commence at 7:30 p.m., and everyone is welcome to attend.

The meeting will be chaired by Wade MacLauchlan, President of the University of Prince Edward Island, who will also speak on reform of our voting system.

The Honourable J. Patrick Boyer QC from Toronto, Ontario will also speak. Mr. Boyer is a former member of the House of Commons and parliamentary secretary in External Affairs and in the Department of National Defence. He is the author of more than a dozen books, and has worked as a journalist specializing in communications and electoral law. He is the present chairperson of the Pugwash Thinkers' Lodge in Nova Scotia, and an adjunct professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Guelph, Ontario. Mr. Boyer provided legal advice to former premier Joe Ghiz on the fixed link referendum. He has taught and written about democratic institutions including electoral systems, and has participated as a principal speaker at conferences and workshops on democratic institutions in Canada, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, India, the United Kingdom and the United States. He will speak on electoral reform.

Dr. Tom Connor of Charlottetown will speak as well. Dr. Connor is a retired civil servant. He served as a Deputy Minister of Development for the Prince Edward Island government. He has also been a sessional lecturer in political studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. Dr. Connor continues to serve on both local and national level policy advisory boards.
