Final Hearing on Review of Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission

The Standing Committee on Community Affairs and Economic Development will hold a final hearing on its review of the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission on Tuesday, June 16 in Charlottetown.

The Committee was mandated by the Legislative Assembly in November 2008 to consult with Island consumers and industry stakeholders to determine the Commission’s overall role in serving Islanders’ interests with regards to energy costs and also rent increases.

The Committee advertised for submissions several times throughout the winter and held two meetings in March. “There were a few individuals and groups who were unable to attend either meeting,” Chair Robert Henderson noted this week. “ We were mandated to solicit the views of Islanders and we felt it was important to hold one more meeting to accommodate those who were unable to attend the Committee’s meetings in March.”

The Committee submitted an interim report to the Legislative Assembly in April and agreed to continue the Committee’s review of IRAC once the Spring session ended.

Henderson encouraged any interested person or group who may wish to address the Committee on this issue to contact the Committee Clerk to have their name added to the agenda for next week’s meeting. “The Committee will also continue to accept written submissions on IRAC until June 30,” he added.

The Committee’s meeting in Charlottetown will begin at 1 p.m.Tuesday, June 16 in the Pope Room of the Coles Building. For more information, please contact the Committee Clerk of the Legislative Assembly at 620-3764 or visit the Legislative Assembly’s website at www.assembly.pe.ca.
