Residents of the Margaret Stewart Ellis Home, O’Leary are enjoying the benefits of a recently added wing as well as renovations and upgrades to the existing building, says Minister of Health and Wellness Doug Currie.
“Our government is committed to ensuring Island seniors have access to the most modern long term care facilities and the services and comfort they deserve,“ said Minister Currie. “I am very pleased with the upgraded design of Margaret Stewart Ellis, which provides a home-like atmosphere and gives residents more space and privacy. It has also allowed us to move eight new residents into the home, increasing the number from 25 to 33.“
In the modernized facility, residents live in one of three households and every resident has a private room and bathroom. The smaller household design provides a better physical environment as well as an improved staffing model focussed on person-centred care.
“The residents and staff are very pleased with the expansion and renovations,“ said John Martin, administrator of Margaret Stewart Ellis. “It’s wonderful to see our residents enjoying all the comforts and benefits that their bright, spacious home has to offer.”
Government invested approximately $2.5 million in the Margaret Stewart Ellis Home as part of its $65 million manor replacement program, one of the pillars of the 2009 provincial Healthy Aging Strategy.
Under the program, Colville Manor in Souris was completed in October 2011, Maplewood Manor in Alberton was completed in November 2011 and Summerset Manor in Summerside was completed in January 2013. The Prince Edward Home in Charlottetown is expected to be completed in October 2013, and construction on the Riverview Manor in Montague will begin in 2015.
