EMO Monitoring Reports of Flooding; TPW Advises of Road Closures and Restrictions

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
The Prince Edward Island Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) has received reports of flooding in inland and coastal areas.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works has asked that all road users exercise caution as several roads have been affected by flooding which can cause washouts and narrower shoulders. There are also several detour routes in place and drivers are asked to be patient and cautious in these areas.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works is advising Islanders of the following closures and restrictions:

• Trans Canada Highway at John and Kellow, Cornwall, closed to traffic, detoured, engineers assessing damage to road culvert

• Route 15, Brackley Point road, closed and detoured between Kilkenny and Black River Roads due to flooding

• Route 223, Winsloe road, closed and detoured between MacKenzie and Horne Cross Roads, due to flooding

• Route 9, Long Creek at the intersection of route 19a, restricted to one lane, due to flooding

• Route 19, Nine Mile Creek near Rice Point, restricted to one lane

• McGuirk Road, Dromore, closed between Cape Breton Road and Dromore Road

• MacEachern Rd, St Catherines, closed between St. Catherines road and New Argyle Road

EMO coordinates provincial response when an emergency or disaster develops beyond the capability of the municipal government.

“I want to commend Island municipalities, the provincial Department of Transportation and Public Works employees, and home owners who are working hard to deal with the damage caused by the heavy rains on the weekend,” said Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister responsible for the Office of Public Safety.

In response to inquiries, officials advise property owners to contact their insurance companies immediately to report any damages of flooding and arrange for an inspection. As well, EMO staff suggest residents should document any damage caused by the heavy rains with photos or videos, in the event that future claims are necessary.

EMO Staff are responsible for coordinating the province’s involvement in all phases of emergency management, including mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
