The Department of Education and the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, the Island Agency that helps immigrants settle and integrate on Prince Edward Island, recently published "Understanding Others: A Community Handbook for PEI." The information handbook, which promotes a better understanding of multiculturalism, has been distributed to Island schools and libraries.

"This handbook allows Island students to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of our diverse cultures that strengthen our communities," says Minister of Education, Chester Gillan.

Laura Lee Howard, of the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada says the handbook promotes understanding and acceptance of others by taking a look at the origins of Islanders, myths about immigrants, racism on PEI, anti-racism education, and learning the four C's: Comprehending, Confronting, Challenging, and Changing.

"Understanding Others," an 80 page informational handbook, is available in both French and English at PEI schools and public libraries.
