Education Indicators for Atlantic Canada, a Canadian first in providing the public with a comparative overview of how well provinces' education systems are performing, was released today by the ministers of education of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. The report demonstrates the provinces' strong commitment to regional collaboration in education.
The ministers recognize that people want, and have a right to know, how well our education systems are educating our children. Education Indicators for Atlantic Canada contains information on such things as Atlantic Canadian students' achievement in national and international tests, the costs of education, students' satisfaction with their school experience, average class sizes, and students' participation rates in various programs. Results from the report will help the provinces set and measure their success in meeting higher standards for our students and ultimately will inform decision-making to improve the quality of education.
Education Indicators for Atlantic Canada is a product of the Atlantic Education Indicators Project. The report provides information on how well the education systems are performing through a snapshot of current conditions. Education Indicators for Atlantic Canada includes indicators where data were readily available and comparable. Over the next year, the provinces will determine the feasibility of adding information based on input received from education stakeholders across the region. The departments of education appreciate the financial assistance of Human Resources Development Canada for publication of this first report.
